Sutherland and Reed to represent England

at 2005 World Seniors Curling Championships

Michael Sutherland and his team of John Brown, John MacDougall and Robin Gemmell won the first English Senior Men’s Curling Championships at the Greenacres Curling Club. In the best of five games final, Sutherland won the first three games to overcome Eric Laidler’s team of Peter Bowyer, Alistair Davison and Ian Curle, 10-3; 8-5; 5-3. In the first game, Sutherland pounced early and was 5-0 up after two ends, but in the second, Laidler took a three in the second following Sutherland’s one in the first. Sutherland then replied with a three in the third and continued to control the game. For the third game, Laidler swapped his team around and Peter Bowyer took over as skip with Laidler at third, Ian Curle playing second and Alistair Davison at lead. The team tactics also changed to a more offensive drawing game with lots of front guards that had not been employed in the first two outings. In a tight game, with Bowyer possibly laying two, subject to a measure, Sutherland had to hit and stick with his last stone to secure victory. He did this and secured his place at his fourth Senior World Curling Championships. This year’s team only retains one other player from his previous trips, John MacDougall, and they are joined by newly qualified seniors (over 50 on 30th June 2004) John Brown who curled for England in the 1985 and 1987 World Curling Championships and Robin Gemmell who curled for England in the 1987 World Curling Championships.

Sutherland is joined for the trip back to Greenacres for the 2005 Senior World Curling Championships by Joan Reed’s Senior Ladies team that were not challenged for their England spot. Reed’s team of Glynnice Lauder, Venetia Scott and Moira Davison won the Senior Women’s World Bronze medal two year’s ago and came fourth last year despite calling on Irene Laidler as a replacement for Venetia the day before the championships started.
